Welcome!

Bal Masque VI ~ Verses, Rhymes, and Fairy Tales ~ King and Queen Mwindo VIEstablished in 1998, the Krewe of Mwindo is one of the more recent arrivals in the tradition of gay carnival Balls. Mwindo is also unique, being the only predominantly black gay carnival organization in New Orleans. Filled with the same energy of youth that drove our namesake, Mwindo has been a trendsetting organization from the start.

On the evening of the fourth Sunday before Mardi Gras, we hold one of New Orleans’ most lavish and colorful gay carnival balls. Our presentations are spectacular— working in our secret studio, members work for months ahead of Mardi Gras to design, build, and accessorize their own costumes and the accompanying sets.

Members of the Krewe of Mwindo host this elaborate Ball for the enjoyment of their invited guests. Seated at tables around the Ball floor, guests enjoy an abundance of food and drink while the Krewe members display their costumes in a series of tableau presentations. After this display, guests dance the night away with continuous entertainment.

Our tableau is strictly formal and by invitation only. Table invitations to the Ball are reserved for our supporters and select guests. If you receive an invitation, know that you are among a very select few! General seating is available only in the balcony area.

Krewe membership is by nomination and pledging during the annual rush party process. Once admitted into the organization, members work around the year, holding fundraising events to finance the Ball and the Krewe’s other charitable events.
